Famous Chapora fort which almost in ruin state was built by the Bijapur ruler, Adil Shah sometime during the 15th Century and named as Shahapura meaning Town of Shah. Chapora fort was renovated and rebuild with border watch post by the Portuguese in the year 1617. Most of Mogul architectural features of Chapora fort, baring massive ramparts and the scattered Muslim tombstones, were either demolished or altered during the renovation and reconstruction work by the Portuguese. Portuguese Kingdom continued to extend farther North so Chapora fort become deserted some time around 1892 and Abandoned since the 19th century, as the natural result once majestic Chapora Fort is now almost ruins, but still a tourist attraction near the famous Anjuna beach, exotic beach heaven of hippies.

Ruins of majestic Chapora fort are located quite close to north Goa sea shore, famous as exotic beach heaven of hippies and popular Anjuna beach. Road distance between ruin fort site and Mapusa, commercial heart of Goa is hardly 10 km, where as state capital city Panjim is about 18 km away.
Tourist on the Goa travel can cat local buses heading to Anjuna beach either from Mapusa or from Panaji for reaching to Chapora fort. Taxies, tourist vehicles and even the rented bikes are other transportation ways for the Chapora fort tour.
