Church of St. Augustine, one of
most fabulous architectural monument and tourist attraction of Goa
tours, was constructed almost 400 years ago in the year 1602
[construction was started in 1597 and completed in Five years]. This
is fact that at present times Church of St. Augustine is in ruins
status but still 46 meters tall fascinating bell tower of church is
drawing a considerable high chunk of travelers on the Goa tourism.
Church of St. Augustine, brain child of twelve Augustinians Friars,
is considered to be one of the greatest of three Augustinian
churches. Though there are no decisive evidence for the
architectural designer of Church of St. Augustine but it is believed
that the brilliant architect was from Italy.
History of Goa states that Augustines were banned by the Portuguese
government and Church of St. Augustine, along with the convent was
abandoned. This neglected status resulted in collapse of, once the
largest church in Goa. This was around 1931 that Church of St.
Augustine started to fall and in span of seven years, till 1938 has
lost major parts.
It is stated that in the golden days Church of St. Augustine, Goa
was having our altars, eight chapels, and a convent and was
considered as the biggest and important Christian prayer place in
Goa. |
