Located at city heart of Panjim city, Church of Mary is one among the earliest constructed churches of Goa. Historically this majestic church is said to be constructed in the year 1541, As per the popular legend Church of Mary Immaculate Conception was rebuild at present location some time around 1619, only after the Panaji became the capital of Portuguese ruled Goa.
Though inside the church there is quite simple or almost none decoration but with magnificent architecture and adjacent scenic surroundings church looks very fabulous. Church of Mary Immaculate Conception, Panaji at night appears a marvelous construction with highly beautiful and picturesque display of light.
Main altar of church is dedicated to Mary Immaculate and two other altars are dedicated to Jesus Christ and Our Lady of Rosary. There are marble statues of St Paul and one of St Peter at the side of each altar. Church also have chapel of St. Francis Xavier, towards the south of the main altar.
Church of Mary Immaculate Conception is renowned world over for having 2nd largest church bell in the world. Till the 1841 this great bell was part of Church of Our Lady of Grace located in Old Goa and shifted here.
Feast of Immaculate Conception is held every year on the 8th December to mark the celebrations of conception of Lord Jesus by Mother Mary. Several thousands of devotees from all parts of world gathered at church for this celebration.
