Sea
shore architectural beauty, fort Aguada is one of most impressive
Portuguese construction in the Goa, India. On the south of Candolim,
there is source of fresh water in close to vicinity of sea shore,
hence this place was selected for the construction of a fort for the
shipping and defense purpose. Fort name is based on Portuguese word
Aguada meaning water. Construction of fort Aguada was started in the
year 1609 and was completed in time of three years. If we consider
Portuguese forts, they are smaller in size in comparison of Indian
forts but Fort Aguada is one of largest Portuguese fort with 79
canons and is the only Portuguese fort never conquered by enemies
during 450 year rule of the Portuguese. In the year 1864, Portuguese
constructed a four storey lighthouse near the fort Aguada, which in
the present times is the oldest one in Asia. Fort Aguada is not one
of the best preserved Portuguese monument in Goa but still one of
prime tourist attraction for the travelers on Goa tour. |

Fort
Aguada is located on the northern shores of Mandvi [Mandovi] river
close to the land having several natural springs, source of fresh
water, in Bardez taluka of north Goa. Fort Aguada is at almost same
road distance of nearly 20 km from the Capital city Panjim and
Commercial town Mapusa.
Effective and regular bus service is available from Panaji and
Mapusa for reaching fort Aguada. Visitors on Goa tour also have
option of hiring a taxi or tourist vehicle. |

Architectural wonder Fort Aguada is the largest Portuguese fort
built to keep constant views over the uninterrupted 30 km sandy
stretch to the border of Maharashtra.
At the base of Fort Aguada, two of most picturesque and popular Goa
beaches Sinquerim and Candolim are prime tourist attraction on Fort

Presently Fort Aguada is serving as the Central Jail of Goa.
