In the history of Goa a few tandem
happenings has been resulted in the creation of desire of freedom
from the centuries old Portuguese rule. At the time of Portuguese
rules many Hindu temples and religious places were either destroyed
or converted into churches hence the wounded Hindu religious
emotions were on the fire.
Christian Societies of Goa were also not satisfied with Portugal's
relation with the Pope and Vatican, thus waves of un-satisfaction
were flowing under the layers. At the same times Portuguese
dominance over the spice trade of India was reduced to great extant
by Dutch and Marathas started to take control of areas like
Bicholim, Canacona, Pernem, Ponda, Quepem, Sanguem and Satari etc.
All these happenings proved fuel for the fire of desire for the
freedom and thus a struggle started between the Portuguese ruler and
native of Goa.
When in the 1947, India was set free from the centuries old British
rule, Goan people were highly inspired with this historic event and
become more hopeful about their freedom from the Portuguese rule.
The most impressive thing about the freedom struggle of Goa is that
this was initiated by the churches of Goa and was ably supported by
the Hindu communities of Goa.
Free India was working on the political fronts for the removal of
Portuguese rule, where as native were fighting it but all the
efforts were resulting without fulfilling the freedom desire. The
first light of hope appeared with the freedom of Dadra [24 July
1954] under the leadership of Francis Mascarenhas, one of famous
Goan nationalist.
In the October 1961, a seminar was conducted at Delhi for abolishing
Portuguese colonialism and soon after this, Indian Armed Forces were
forced to interfere the non humanitarian treatment given to native
Goans and leaders of freedom struggle.
Finally on the 19 December 1961, Goa was set free from the Colonial
rule of Portuguese and become integral part of India and after
almost 26 years of this happening, coastal land Goa, known for
splendid beach holiday world over become 25th Indian state on 30th
May 1987. |
